Gazprom dividends official. Should I buy Gazprom shares or not? stock dividend yield chart

The Russian language borrowed the word "dividends" from the Latin - "that which is subject to division." In the economic and mathematical dictionary, you can find the following definition for this word: “Dividends are payments appointed by the Board of Directors of a joint-stock company for distribution among shareholders in proportion to the number of shares issued.”

AT tax code RF also clarifies the meaning of this word: any income from shares (owned by a shareholder) that a shareholder (or participant) receives from a company at the time of distribution of profits that remain after payment of taxes. This income is proportional to the shares of other shareholders in the authorized capital of the company.

They are divided (according to the stages of payments) into:

  1. Intermediate (preliminary) - paid to the end financial period:
    • quarterly;
    • semiannual.
  2. Final - at the end of the financial period (annual).
  1. Ordinary - such shares give the right to vote to the shareholder at the general meeting, are certifying documents of participation in the joint-stock company, they can receive dividends and part of the property of the joint-stock company after its liquidation.
  2. Privileged - the advantage of the first receipt of income of the JSC (the same advantage of the first stage and in the liquidation of the company).

According to the payment method there are:

  1. Cash - paid in cash.
  2. Property - payments are made by own shares and property.

By the size of the amounts of payments themselves - full and partial.

Who can receive dividends

Dividend recipients can be not only shareholders of the company, but also nominal shareholders (a person representing the interests of another person, but without the right to own securities), who are entered in the register of the JSC in the manner prescribed by the constituent assembly. Dividends are accrued to such a nominal holder, but he is also responsible for the transfer of these sums of money depositors (specific shareholders-owners).

In a situation where the shares or part of them are sold to another shareholder (after the list of persons who have the right to receive dividends has been drawn up - this may be the date of closing of the register), the right to receive dividends will still belong to the previous owner of the shares. And the new owner can exercise this right only by proxy, which will be issued to him by the seller.

Latest news and forecast

The determining factor for Gazprom quotes is market price for oil, because the price of gas is its initial price. The lowering of forecasts for the popularity of raw materials by the major world economies (primarily China) and the development of fresh, cheaper production options on the planet, has led to a rebalancing of the cost of oil and gas, with lower quality.

This trend continues in 2018 and, according to many experts in the field of economics, will continue in 2018.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) reread the forecast for the global economy for 2018 to decrease in mid-July. The International Energy Agency (IEA) says that poor global economic growth will change the gas market in the coming years.

Until 2021, the increase in the popularity of natural gas will drop to one and a half percent per year due to stagnation in Europe and a slowdown in the growth of China's economy.

IEA experts also say that the popularity of gas has increased by 2.5 percent per year over the last 6 years. But the entry into the market of renewable energy sources and inexpensive coal will lead to a glut of the global market. European market already meets with an oversupply of liquefied gas, so it will be difficult for the modern leader Gazprom.

At the meeting, it was decided to make the annual meeting for Moscow on June 30, 2018 in Moscow at the branch of the organization. The Board of Directors confirmed and submitted for review at the meeting the draft amendments to the charter of Gazprom, as well as the draft regulations on the joint meeting of shareholders, the board of directors, the board, the chairman of the board of Gazprom in the latest editions.

The papers have been prepared mainly in connection with modifications to the Federal Law “On joint-stock companies ah” and approved in June 2015 by the meeting of shareholders of the organization with a fresh version of the charter.

In 2015, the state was going to purchase 68.8 billion rubles from Gazprom, that is, the earlier forecast has not changed, according to a statement from the Russian Ministry of Finance. That equates to a 5 percent increase from this year and equates to about 9.8 rubles per share, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Gazprom, according to fresh orders from the government, can now allocate 50% of its net income under IFRS for dividends. Thus, the income of Gazprom (GAZP) may be more than 14 rubles. per share, and the dividend yield can be as high as 9%.

In 2018, payments to the budget are valued at 92.9 billion rubles, according to the ministry, which equals 10.2 rubles per share.

What will pay?

Since last year, dividends are added with a change. According to the results of 2018, Gazprom plans to pay dividends of RUB 9.8 per share. per share. The percentage of payment exceptions is equal to 18% of net income.

At first glance, it looks like dividends on Gazprom shares are starting to grow in value again. But analysts do not predict stable growth dividends in the near future. According to their assumptions, Gazprom's return to pre-crisis levels is likely only after the start of deliveries to China, which is expected not earlier than 2018.

Closing the registry

To win dividends for the year, you need to be a shareholder of the company for just a day. This day is referred to as the registry closing date, or the cut-off date, or the cut-off date.

The register is a list of all members of the organization, which is available to any open joint-stock company. It changes every day - someone sells shares, someone buys. Someone is discharged or recorded there.

According to the results of the year, the company must stop, choose a date, enter the register and see who the shareholder is and pay them the profit in the form of dividends. The time for compiling the register goes from March to June, after which there is a meeting of shareholders, at which the results of the past year will be approved and the organization's policy for the next year will be determined.

Registry closing day - the day on which the organization will look at the registry. At Gazprom, the closing date of the register is set for April 20, which means that on April 20, at the close of trading on the stock exchange, Gazprom will register this list and shareholders will be paid all the income that has accumulated over the year. They will also have the right to vote at the shareholders' meeting.

At the same time, it does not matter how many shares were owned by shareholders before April 20, for example, shareholders could hold them for ten years, and if they bought them five minutes before closing and sold them the next day, they will still receive dividends in the same number.

And the person who owned shares for ten years and sold them on April 20 before the market closes will not receive dividends, even though she owned them for a long time before that. Thus, in one season - i.e. dividend period can participate in the payment of annual income from several organizations. Data on the cut-off period of the register is registered on many sites of economic subjects.

Gazprom dividends for 2017 - latest news

During the meeting of PJSC Gazprom shareholders, a decision was made to approve the amount of dividends for 2017. During this period, the gas monopolist directed 190 billion rubles, which is 26.6% of net profit.

Each shareholder of the gas monopoly receives a little more than 8 rubles per share. The income from this is obtained in the amount of 6%. This is not a large indicator of profit, since in others large companies you can earn up to 9%.

Payment of dividends on Gazprom shares in 2018

PJSC Gazprom is the latest energy corporation to approve its 2017 revenues. The register of shareholders will be closed by the gas monopolist on July 19, which allows you to buy its shares before July 17 in order to profit from this transaction. Most of Gazprom's revenue goes to larger projects.

According to the final figures for 2017, Gazprom paid less dividends than the Ministry of Finance set. According to these recommendations, state-owned companies are required to give shareholders no less than half of all profits. The gas monopoly is the only facility for which an exception has been made for the second year.

To make up for Gazprom's lack of income, the government has proposed increasing taxes on the company. The way out of this situation was to increase the coefficient when calculating taxation on the extraction of minerals from September 1 to December 3, 2018. Thanks to this, another 72 billion rubles will go to the budget of the Russian Federation. Such measures were already taken last year.

What will be Gazprom's dividends for 2018-2019? Forecast

According to the Russian analyst financial group Otkritie Broker by Timur Nigmatulin, do not expect a significant increase in dividends due to an increase in volume investment program in 2018-2019. This year, the company will repay only 15.2 billion rubles, and in 2019, 8.4 billion dollars of debt. Improvements can only begin in 2020, when the construction of the Power of Siberia and the Turkish Stream is completed.

According to, CEO JSC "Petersburg-Invest" of Alexander Pavlov, with a weak development in the market, buying Gazprom shares for profit is a rather interesting idea.

Earlier, the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation stated that a number of companies that own a share from the state can switch to paying interim dividends based on the results of quarters and six months.

Gazprom is one of the largest joint-stock companies in Russia, holding 11% of the global and 66% Russian production gas. Most of the company's shares are owned by the state. One share costs 5 rubles, and on July 2 on the stock exchange one share cost 142.53 rubles.

The dream of “buying Gazprom shares and living on dividends” can remain a dream if you do not have at least minimal knowledge of what and how to do.

This article contains the necessary minimum of information, a kind of “educational program” on the issue of “how to receive dividends on Gazprom shares”.

Cut-off for dividends

To be eligible to receive dividends, you must be a shareholder on a certain date. This means that you only need to own the stock one day a year to receive dividends!

“Dividend cut-off” is a slang name for an important process – compiling (fixing) a list of shareholders entitled to receive dividends on a share. This list is compiled for a specific date:

And whoever is a shareholder on that date will qualify for dividends. It looks as if we skipped classes (or work) for a whole year, came only to the last lecture, and we were credited with attendance for the whole year.

It sounds strange, and even absurd, but no other mechanism has yet been invented, and it looks the same all over the world: dividends are paid only to those shareholders who fall into the “register of shareholders for the payment of dividends” (this list may be called differently, but the essence is the same - to determine those who are entitled to dividends).

For example:

  • It is known that July 20, 2017 is the date of fixing the list of shareholders entitled to receive dividends based on the results of operations for 2016
  • One person owned a Gazprom share throughout 2016 and the first half of 2017, but sold it, say, on July 14 - six days before the date of compiling the list of shareholders
  • Another person bought the stock on July 17 — just three days before the dividend cutoff date.
  • The first person will not receive dividends, and the second will receive (!!!)

The procedure for compiling the list of shareholders is computerized as much as possible, and the process itself, for our convenience, takes place without our participation: if we are the owner of Gazprom shares, we don’t need to worry about anything else and think, just as we don’t need to know the structure of the engine of our car in order to go to him to the store.

The organization in which we have an account for the purchase of Gazprom shares (broker) will do everything for us, no additional action is required.

For a person who buys Gazprom shares for years (namely, this is how you need to buy shares and in no case use the money that will be needed in the next 3 years for this), information about the date the list of shareholders was compiled does not give anything special, but this will help to understand the behavior share prices at these special moments and the operation of the whole mechanism described below.

Where can I find out the date of fixing the list of shareholders?

Previously, legislation allowed companies not to announce in advance the date of fixing the list of shareholders entitled to receive dividends. This date has always been announced after the fact.

For example, you could find out that the date of the register was some date two months ago. And only those who owned the stock at that time were “lucky”.

But now all companies are required to report this date in advance. This allows everyone interested persons prepare for this event and decide for yourself the question of the expediency of owning a share and the date of its purchase and sale.

The date of drawing up the list of shareholders of Gazprom is announced annually at the annual general meeting of shareholders (abbreviated as "OSA" or "AGM"), information about which is also published by the company in advance.

So, to find out about the dividend cutoff date, the following procedure is required:

  1. You need to find the “Material Facts” section on the Gazprom website
  2. In the list of material facts, you need to find "Message on the date on which persons are determined ...":

Having opened this document, we will learn about the date when the list of persons entitled to receive dividends on Gazprom shares will be compiled.

So, for example, in 2017, the date for compiling the list of persons to receive dividends on Gazprom shares was determined at the AGM held on July 04:

As you can see, the date is set to July 20, 2017. However… the share must be purchased no later than 2 business days before this date, as Delivery of shares is formally carried out in 2 days. This rule is called "T+2 trading mode".

T+2 trading mode

The T+2 trading mode established for most shares on the Moscow Exchange assumes that the delivery of the share takes place two days after the transaction:

Obviously, the letter "T" in this case means the word "TODAY", i.e. "TODAY". Therefore, if translated into Russian, the rule sounds like “Today + 2”. This procedure for conducting transactions is also present in almost all world stock markets, this is completely normal.

This rule must be taken into account. So, for example, if the date of compiling the list is July 20, then the share must be bought on July 18 - in two business days. This is confusing for all beginners at first, but getting used to it is easy:

July 18 in this example (these are real dates in the summer of 2017) is the last day on which the "stock trades with dividends" is said to be.

dividend gap

What immediately comes to mind when the mechanism for receiving dividends becomes clear? What can you do knowing that you can only hold a stock for one day to receive dividends?

You can buy a share before compiling the register, go through the "cut-off" ... and immediately sell the share - now we will receive dividends in any case.

Unfortunately, there is no easy money here either - this method does not work, because the day after the last day when the stock traded with dividends ... its price usually falls in proportion to the size of future dividends.

Here's what it looked like on a chart in July 2017:

It was known that the company would pay dividends in the amount of 8.04 rubles to all persons who, as of July 20, were owners of Gazprom shares.

Under the T+2 trading regime, the last day the stock trades with dividends is July 18. The chart shows that the price on the evening of July 18 was about 124 rubles.

And the very next day, the stock fell by -5.5 rubles to 118, this price gap is called the “Dividend Gap”:

This is precisely because many do just that—buying a stock short-term only to sell it as soon as the cut-off rule is met.

An ordinary person (especially a beginner) is not recommended to play on these price fluctuations and try to make money in this way, because:

  • The dividend gap can be much bigger size than the amount of dividends, so you can easily get a loss here. Indeed, if the amount of dividends is 8 rubles, and the share is sold after the dividend gap by -9 rubles cheaper, then the result of the entire operation will be a loss
  • It is not recommended for a novice investor to make frequent transactions, but to try to adhere to the “buy and hold” strategy (with certain reservations discussed in other articles) - this will save him from most of the dangers that lie in wait for an inexperienced person in this area

A private investor who adheres to simple and safe strategies (which are described on the pages of this site) needs to be aware of the dividend gap first of all in order not to be afraid of such pictures when a stock loses -5% in one day (and sometimes -10%) of its price.

Now we understand that this is natural and absolutely normal.

Dividends on Gazprom shares

What dividends does Gazprom pay its shareholders? Below is a table that shows the amount, dates of payment of dividends and dates of closing of registers:

Naturally, the amount of dividends in rubles does not tell us anything about the attractiveness of owning such a share until we compare it with the value of the share itself.

In fact, dividends in the amount of 8 rubles - is it a lot or a little? If a share costs 40 rubles, then its purchase will bring only dividends (there is still a profit from the difference in purchase and sale prices) + 20% per annum, and if 800 rubles, then only + 1%.

Dividend yield is the yield obtained using the dividend/share price formula. When a company pays a dividend of 10 rubles, and the share itself costs 200 rubles, we say that the dividend yield is + 5% per annum (10/200).

Since the price of a share changes every day, the amount of dividend yield changes along with it. To be clear, we can calculate what dividend yield could be obtained if we buy a share before the cutoff:

What can be seen from this table? A lot of things:

  • Gazprom is one of the few companies that regularly pay dividends. This is very important, as we will see later, considering various approaches to increase the return on investment (in other articles)
  • Dividend yield of Gazprom shares at current prices quite attractive - about +6.5% per annum! This is a very good dividend yield for such a liquid stock.

It can be argued that +6.5% per annum is just the same as you can get on bank deposit in reliable bank. Yes, that's right, but after all, the income of the shareholder is made up not only of dividends, but also of the difference in the sale and purchase prices of shares, tax benefits and much more (we will consider in other articles).

For now, let's dwell on the paradoxical conclusion that the lower the price, the higher the dividend yield.

dividend paradox

It’s hard to understand at first, but the lower the share price, the higher the dividend yield and the… more attractive the share! Usually we are used to the concept that if something falls, it is bad, and at first it is difficult to imagine that this could mean quite the opposite.

Let's go back to the very recent past: in May 2017. two months before the payment of dividends on Gazprom shares, their size became known - 8.04 rubles per share (the Board of Directors recommended on May 13, 2017 General Assembly shareholders ("OSA") such amount of dividends).

During these two months, when a share could be bought for dividends, the share price fluctuated in the range from 132 rubles to 112 rubles.

  • If we bought a share at 132 rubles, then the dividend yield would be + 6%
  • If we bought a share at 112 rubles, then the dividend yield would be +7.1%!

That is, it turns out when the stock goes down ... this can be rejoiced! Indeed, in this case, our profitability will be higher!

A person who understands the operation of the entire mechanism described in this article is not at all embarrassed that the stock is falling, he is at that time calculating how the dividend yield of the stock has changed.

taxes

To date, dividends on shares are taxed at a rate of 13%. This means that with a declared dividend of 8.04 rubles per share, we will receive only 7 rubles in our hands!

This is very sad and it is not yet known whether it is possible to get some tax incentives on dividends, therefore, while you need to calculate the return on dividends minus these 13%.

An attentive reader, looking at the pictures of the dividend gap above, probably managed to notice that with a dividend of 8 rubles, the price decrease as a result of the dividend gap was only -5.5 rubles, which would give us a little more than 1% income in a couple of days :

  • We buy a share on July 18 at 124 rubles
  • On July 19, we immediately sell it at a dividend gap of -5.5 rubles cheaper at 118.5
  • On August 1, we receive dividends of 8 rubles
  • The result of the operation: +2.5 rubles from the invested 124 rubles, i.e. actually +2% in two days!

But, if we deduct taxes, we will see that the picture will change dramatically: +1.2% (which, of course, is also not bad, but we must remember that such a result of the operation is not guaranteed and it can be the other way around).

Investors are just as important market participants as smaller traders. Conceptually, their approach to the analysis of the company's value differs in many ways from the canonical approach used by hedge funds. For example, investment decision own funds may be taken on the basis of Gazprom's dividend forecast, and the prospects for interest payments in the coming years.

Consider what the owners promise investors, and how their words correspond to reality.

How Gazprom's dividend rate is formed in 2017

AT last years gas tycoon refused to link the value of dividends to the value of quotations, instead of this Gazprom uses the formula for net profit for the reporting period. However, in reality, the amount of dividends paid for each share is strictly set by the board of directors, and under certain circumstances may differ significantly from the calculated data.

In particular, for the previous reporting period (2016), the recommended amount for paying dividends on ordinary shares of Gazprom was 8 Russian rubles, which at present value shares on the market at 120 rubles is 6.5%.

For comparison, in the pre-crisis period, despite the lower value of quotations, dividends were close to 9.5% relative to share prices.

Such percentage reduction the size of payments on the company causes great concern among investors. After all, this means that the reserve funds from net profit on Gazprom's assets have decreased. For a more visual cost, consider the ratio of dividends to the value of shares for the entire period of the existence of Gazprom.

Dividend schedule in Gazprom by years

Important Changes in the Set of Payments . Based on experts' forecasts, Gazprom has about 236.6 million working capital. If we take the weighted average percentage of payments in aggregate - in recent years (since 2009), the gas production magnate has paid a total of 135 million rubles to holders ordinary shares, and about 45% of this amount - to the owners of preferred shares.

Given the presence of a controlling stake in the hands of the corporation of directors, most of the amount remained within the company's capitalization, which made it possible to progress in the pre-crisis period.

Will Gazprom fulfill its dividend obligations?

Despite expert forecasts regarding a further fall in the cost of Russian gas, we we can predict an increase in dividend payments due to several factors.

  1. High inflation rate, due to the general weakening of the ruble. If we consider this factor soberly, then in dollars the amount of payments for Gazprom may even decrease, but when considering the percentage in national currency, the amount will increase.
  2. The general strengthening of the company, due to the payback of new gas channels, which are not conducted through politically unstable Ukraine.

Overall, at the end of 2017, board of directors at Gazprom promises its investors up to 7% in relation to share prices, unless there are big shifts caused by political repression and gas kickbacks from countries of Eastern Europe. Analysts' forecasts in this regard are more pessimistic - only 5%.

What risks may Gazprom management face in 2017

With an overall positive outlook for the company on the part of investors, there are several important factors, each of which may affect the forecast and calculation of Gazprom's annual payments in 2017.

  1. Profitable projects. In particular we are talking about new gas channels, which can start functioning only by the 3rd quarter of 2018, with estimated data for the 4th quarter of 2017. In this case, the company expects a large outflow of investment funds, which will lead to a decrease in stock prices, and, accordingly, net profit, on the basis of which interest rate company's annual profitability.
  2. Strengthening oil. The second factor that can significantly reduce the amount of dividends paid out by Gazprom during 2017 is a significant strengthening of oil. After the settlement of conflicts in the east, thanks to the efforts of Donald Trump and the US military forces, oil stabilized for the first time in the last 2 years, showing a minimum, and as a result, it again became a reliable asset for investors.
  3. The transition of European countries to alternative sources energy sector may reduce the level of consumption of Russian gas, thereby reducing profits at the overall rate of production and, as a result, reducing the amount of payments by the company to its investors.

conclusions

Unfortunately, the good dividends offered by the upcoming forecasts do not always reflect the reality of the situation. In order to keep their main investors, managers overestimate the yield of payments, thereby confusing the forecasts and calculations of experts.

The importance of dividends in investing is a whole section of the economy that is fundamentally different from the analysis of quotes. After all, when deciding and forecasting, both short-term and long term prospects. And most importantly - quite often, dividends can compensate for sharp stock jumps and incorrect forecasts. Whether you are using the Graham and Biggs criteria for valuing and forecasting an enterprise, or forecasting Gazprom quotes, you must consider all pricing factors.

In any case, it is possible to carry out forecasts until the end of 2017 only after a new quarterly IFRS report on the company's profitability.
